The Electrical and Electronic Waste Act requires that the disposal of old equipment from manufacturers and importers is assured. The EAR is responsible for the coordination of the collection of old equipment containers from the municipal recycling centres. When they receive notification from the recycling centres that the containers are ready for collection, they forward this information to a manufacturer/importer. The manufacturer/importer is then required to collect and dispose of the contents. The EAR does not consider geographical location; it could occur that a manufacturer in Freiburg is required to collect a container in Flensburg.
It is highly recommended to work with a waste disposal contractor to fulfil this requirement. They should be active in all regions of Germany and provide evidence that they conform to the Electrical and Electronic Waste Act.
Many companies choose their waste disposal contractor based on price considerations, others look for contractors who dispose of all material exclusively in Germany. Others put a value on the recycling being done by social institutions. The costs incurred also vary considerably. Using indexed pricing (based on a proceeds index) can help to lower the costs – but are more risky. It is also possible to work with fixed prices, thereby eliminating all risks.
